The Latvian Institute of International Affairs (LIIA) in cooperation with the Konrad Adenauer Foundation in Baltic states is honored to invite you to a discussion and presentation of the book: “The Baltic States and the People's Republic of China: Addressing the Issue of Dependency and Conditionality”, which will take place on March 7th, 2023 from 13:00 to 15.00 at the Hotel Bergs (Elizabetes Iela 83/85).
The book in PDF is freely available here.
This discussion is intended to provide a comprehensive analysis of the Baltic states' vision and engagement with China in the areas of politics and security, economy and technology, and society. The book project aims to shed light on the dynamics of dependency and conditionality in the relationship between the Baltic states and China. Therefore, discussion will be an opportunity for scholars, policymakers, and the general public to engage with the research and findings presented in the book. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in discussions on the implications of the Baltic states' engagement with China, the challenges, and opportunities that arise from the relationship.
One of the central themes of the discussion is the issue of dependency and conditionality, which refers to the possible strings attached to China's investments, such as political influence or market access. The discussion will explore how the Baltic states can mitigate the risks of over-reliance on China and promote a more diversified economic and political engagement with the rest of the world.
